New Beginnings: Chapter 4 of Part 8

In the eight-part story "Starting Over," LTC (Retired) John Jackson transitions from widower to private investigator, overcoming various obstacles in different stages.

In the first part, John, newly settled in Seattle, works on obtaining his private investigator license. His journey unfolds between September and December 2012.

During the second part, he confronts a human trafficking ring. While the main perpetrators were apprehended, the hired gun/enforcer managed to flee. This storyline spans April and May 2013.

In the third part, John finds the enforcer in Key West and was initially determined to kill him. However, discovering the man had plans to retire and was cohabiting with a woman, John considers reconsidering. Instead, he hires the Key West enforcer to aid in capturing an assassin, killing his previous target. The assassin, motivated by a desire to harm John on behalf of the detective who dismantled a human trafficking ring, is stopped.

Fast forward to 2019, in the fourth part. John's romance with Maggie cools down, yet another case takes him on an adventure. The incident first involves someone victimizing Luke's wife, Maria. Subsequently, two men attempt to break into John's apartment, intending to attack him. Law enforcement successfully catches the infiltrators, leading them to a strip club. Upon awakening, John discovers Vanessa, a waitress at the strip club, is an undercover officer. A panorama of events is unraveling orchestrated by anarchists. The funding for these events is traced back to a human trafficking ring in Singapore by John using a hacker he met in Key West. He uncovers the criminal, successfully killing the ring leader and his son.

In Part V, Yvonne, the hacker, resides with John. She lacks a support system and struggles with loneliness amid the pandemic. Her attraction to John extends beyond just gratitude for providing a safe haven. Following a series of events, the rogue CIA manager and some former CIA officials hunted John down. They ultimately perish in a heated confrontation, and Yvonne survives a gunshot wound.

Part VI focuses on juxtapositions. Julie, a woman with a turbulent past, moves to Seattle to evade her ex-husband's brothers, who run meth labs on land previously owned by her and her husband. When the brothers and a dealer venture to Seattle to carry out their retribution plot, John and allies spring into action.

In Part VII, John's team engages with a Romanian gang from Chicago, where intrigue comes into play. The events intensify, with people getting injured, including Maggie. Matters whirl to a close as Maggie recovers swiftly, and summer ushers in serenity.

The story follows John Jackson, aged 56, 5'11", and 180 pounds. His wife, Marie Jackson, tragically lost her life on 15th January 2012, measured at 5'8", and weighed 140 pounds. Daughter Angelica Jackson (Angel), aged 29, is 5'5" and weighs 125 pounds. Mary Bradford serves as a bartender for drinks. An established figure at a height of 5'6", and standing at 120 pounds, she's 44 years old. Her sister, Maggie, 45, is 5'6", 115 pounds. Their daughter, Maddie, is 16 years old. Samantha Walker, previously occupying a four-story apartment building next to John, is 49, 5'6", and 130 pounds. Her daughter, Joyce, alias "Lily," changes her identity to work as a stripper. Marion Walker, the third daughter, is 27, 5'4", and 115 pounds.

In summary, throughout his new chapter, John Jackson encounters both challenges and allies while navigating a life of mystery and crime-fighting. As he pushes through personal conflicts and forges new relationships, he remains dedicated to holding the wicked accountable.

John chilled in front of the TV, his mind so lost in grief and anger that the screen in front of him might as well have been a blank wall. The District Attorney had dropped his charges regarding the murder of Judge Morrisson. A small success but paled in the face of his profound sorrow and burning desire for vengeance against the human trafficking ring he believed murdered his wife and friends.

Maggie had passed on the operating table. Wounded by a barrage of gunfire, her broken body could not be repaired. Vetting the live feed from a security camera at home, both Craig and Carl didn't suffer any bullet wounds, but Marty wasn't so lucky. Shot at by the assailant in the doorway, Marty barely managed to pull away before taking a bullet. Craig, Craig, and Carl captured the perpetrators, but the suspect who targeted Marty managed to escape.

Mary rammed John's door and made an entrance with a combination of fury and worry. After a startling moment of seeing John's exhausted appearance, she warned him to join the Bradfords in their grieving ritual. The Bradfords suffered the loss of their daughter, mother, and wife, so they all needed John's presence to help them find comfort.

"Hey, Mary." John spoke out softly, his gaze locked onto his late wife. "I can't, this is all my fault. I put everyone in harm's way."

Mary responded with a determined attitude, her face set in a mix of disappointment and determination.

"It's not your fault, John. This wicked organization is to blame. Sit up straight and follow me to the Bradfords. We can all cry and heal at least a bit if we come together."

John contemplated her words for a minute, then let out a sigh of resignation.

"Fine, I'll go." Then, he reached for his jacket, and they left for the Bradford's. He hoped it would make his emotional recovery at least slightly easier.

Once it was time for John to return home, Mary escorted him back to his apartment. The wound on his heart remained fresh, and everyone at the Bradford's was going through their own personal battle with grief. The father of the Bradfords was especially hard on himself, convinced he should have shielded his family from the harm John had inadvertently drawn everyone into.

"You can't keep putting yourself and others in harm's way," Mary anticipated. "You have to protect yourself and others without getting involved in operations that involve terrifyingly vengeful people or criminals."

Mary lingered, staying put and watching as John settled onto the couch. Mary, who had kept a composed demeanor at Bradford's residence, shifted towards John and hugged him, letting out a torrent of tears. John also joined in, shedding tears of his own. They remained in that position until their energy reserves depleted.

By now, it had passed the 11:00 p.m. hour, so the two sat in recovery, gradually waking up. They drifted off to slumber.

John awoke, finding himself prioritizing his position on the couch. Mary had propped up on her side, her legs resting on John's legs. She was still slumbering. John cautiously arose to visit the bathroom. Upon his return, Mary had likewise woken up. "Wow! We sure knocked ourselves out!" she exclaimed.

"Indeed. A really draining emotional day."

"Oh, yeah. Suppose I better head out now. I have to take care of the bar tonight as one of the bartenders is on a much-needed break."

"Okay, see you soon." John waved farewell as Mary left.

Although marginally improved, John eased himself into his morning routine. He cleaned up, preparing the typical American dish, scrambled eggs, with pimentos, jalapenos, and a few slices of ham. As John got started, the Ring doorbell jangled, summoning his reluctant presence.

John fetched his phone and noted the familiar name of Yvonne. Maybe she had help that John didn't have. He longed for some concrete leads. It had been a month since he'd joined the search for the perpetrator behind Maggie's murder and the other young women's fates.

As John headed towards the door, excitement grew. He opened it just as Yvonne arrived. "Yvonne! It's been ages!"

Yvonne entered and greeted him with a quick hug, followed by a peck on the cheek. She attentively observed John, noting his obvious anxiety. She knew he'd been overly concerned since the day his partner was taken and his lover passed away. She'd have to set him at ease.

"John, there's good news!"

"Cool! Anything related to all this?"

"True. I traced the money for the assassins. Many of them were paid with cash but needed funding. There are just three people who withdrew such a substantial amount close to the incident's date in this area. Two of them were readily dismissed. As it turns out, only a man named Arthur Bedford fits the criteria."

"Who's he?"

"A man who's made a fortune various ways he's left many people with a bad taste in their mouths. He grew his initial fortune from the conflict diamond business and moved on to London. Investing in American industries has brought him more wealth and it seems with a spooky knack for predicting their success. It's been a tad suspicious for most, and now I can connect him to the paymaster of the shooters. Then the key question? Is he the head of the human trafficking ring?"

John stood transfixed as he listened, focusing his gaze on Yvonne. An endorsement for a purpose emerged; to apprehend the wrongdoers behind Maggie's death and the other young women who had endured it. He finally had a suspect.

"Yvonne?"

"Yes?"

"Who's this guy?"

"He's a South African, made millions by his early 20s running a conflict diamond ring. He shifted to London and appeared to have profited from dubious tactics at various businesses. He relocated to the U.S. around ten years ago. Since then, he's amassed a vast fortune investing in various industries and gained repute for a bizarre accuracy in picking winners. It's been more than a little odd for many, so people have been keen to find wrongdoing. Now I can link the man who backed the shooters to him. So, does this mean he's the ringleader?"

"Could well be." John continued to stand there, looking into the distance, seemingly deep in thought.

"Perhaps. He owns luxury apartments in Singapore, Manhattan, and London. He has a huge home in Montana, approximately a hundred miles north of where they usually film Yellowstone. It's near the Lolo National Forest, and right on excellent hunting land. He has his own land he can hunt on, about 400 acres, but they also enjoy exploring the hunting areas of Montana, so he always gets the proper tags."

"Where is he now?"

Yvonne pulled out her phone. "I have set up a tracker for him through an app I developed. Let's take a look. Ah, he's currently at his Montana residence. He absolutely loves the hunting there."

John stared at her. "Me, too."

Yvonne raised her hands. "Please wait. I have sent this information on his activities to the FBI to check. They will handle this appropriately, and you don't need to take the risk of getting hurt yourself."

"I don't care. I want him."

Yvonne frowned. "Then consider your daughter. Don't put yourself in danger and lose her parents. Take a breather."

John stared at Yvonne. "Will you help me?"

Yvonne sighed. "Yes, but not until next week. I'm waiting for the FBI to respond to the information I sent them. If they do nothing, we can start planning."

John continued to stare at Yvonne. "Next Friday, I'll dismantle that organization."

Yvonne studied him and finally agreed. She then began eating.

John finished his meal rapidly. As soon as they were through, he cleaned the kitchen and took his laptop. He inquired about Lucas's location from Yvonne, and she provided it. He examined the Google Maps layout around where Lucas Berenson had his country estate. It was secluded, which was ideal, and it was not defended from any direction. It was atop a small hill, but there was nothing to hinder someone from approaching the house.

John pondered the various methods of reaching the site. He considered what he could take, when he would carry out the assault, and other details. There were means available. However, he was unsure if there was any security there. He had to find that out. He turned back to Yvonne.

"Do you know anything about the security around Lucas? Have you attempted to inspect the house to determine if it's monitored by phone? What if he has a security system in place?"

"I haven't tried to check the house, but if he does have it set up for monitoring, I should be able to bypass it. He usually has two bodyguards with him. They accompany him everywhere."

"Okay, can you provide me with their names and backgrounds?"

"Yes." Yvonne paused and took a deep breath. "John, please don't do this."

"I've given the FBI a week to investigate, but if they tell me they can't handle the task, then I will."

Yvonne nodded. "I'll see what I can do. I have a place to stay in Fremont for a few days. But it would be nice if I could stay here."

John nodded and parted a half-smile. "You are free to visit anytime. The other apartment is unoccupied."

"Thanks." Yvonne sat up and kissed John on the cheek. "I'll gather my belongings."

John woke up around 5 am. He glanced at the clock and grunted. He had been getting little sleep for the past few weeks, but he had slept solidly for six hours last night.

He sat up, then realized that someone was next to him in bed. He turned to see Yvonne, lying spooned against him with her back facing him. He removed the covers. She was undressed. He grinned, despite his grief for Maggie.

John rose and strode to the bathroom, then returned to the bed. He tapped Yvonne gently. She awoke immediately.

"What?" She was still somewhat groggy.

"Decided to... get cozy with me?"

Yvonne rubbed her eye. "Yes, I needed some intimacy after being alone for so long. I'm not expecting to have sex, just some companionship and possibly sharing some feelings about her or anything else, if you'd like."

"Thank you." John stood up. "I'm going to get dressed and prepare breakfast. Would you care for some?"

Yvonne rose and stretched. "Yes." She ran her hand through her hair. "You look good, John."

"I appreciate the compliment." John scrutinized Yvonne's physique. "You've filled out a bit. Your ass and tits are quite plump. You look delicious."

Yvonne reached out and touched John's face. "I understand. I wasn't seeking intimacy, just some human interaction and a little cuddling."

"Thank you." John stood and left the room.

Yvonne flashed a smile. "Thanks. I've been putting in more efforts in fitness, but I've been eating more protein. I was striving to become stronger and these changes in my body just happened while building muscles."

John turned around. "You're stunning, Yvonne. How about eggs for breakfast? Perhaps waffles or pancakes?"

"Eggs sound delicious."

John swiftly made his way to the kitchen to prepare breakfast.

John, Marty, Carl, George, and Craig assembled in John's apartment. Yvonne had gone to the additional apartment. They had meticulously discussed various options to raid Lucas Berenson's residence in Montana. The collected information indicated several entry points where the security alarm could be disabled, making it easier. If the alarm couldn't be disabled, they would need to tackle the situation more carefully and neutralize the cameras. Of course, doing so would alert the occupants that they were coming.

One more dilemma was that Marty and Carl knew one of the bodyguards with Lucas in Montana. He was a former 75th Regiment of the 2nd Ranger battalion from Ft. Lewis, and both had briefly encountered him when he was there. They also learned that he was quite hot-headed and not popular among his peers. He was a solitary, violent individual. The other guy was a former cop, so he would not be familiar with their usual tactical approach.

By 5 pm, John received the anticipated call. It came from Allison.

"Hey, Allison, what's the update?"

"The IT guys successfully dug deeper into it and they can piece together a case little by little. It'll take time since they need to trace every subordinate involved in the kidnappings. The Bureau wants to implicate the entire organization, so they can bring to justice all his collaborators."

"Alright, thanks."

"I can tell what you're up to, John," Allison continued. "You're planning on attacking him, right?"

"He murdered my wife, kidnapped more women, and allowed other men to pummel, brutalize, and kill women. How the hell am I supposed to move past that?"

"Stay out of it and allow us to handle this. The IT team report that your computer expert's intel was meticulously documented and leads to other kidnapping managers in San Diego and Miami. Let us finish this first."

"Allow us to complete our job and I'll do mine."

"You have to let us handle it."

"Thanks, Allison. I'll keep in touch."

"John, wait..." Allison continued, but John had already hung up.

"What's your opinion?" John inquired of the group.

All eyes turned towards Craig, the head of the detective agency he and his team worked in. They waited for his verdict. Craig scanned the room, sensing the desperation in the men's faces. He considered his options and they all observed his thoughts. Finally, he made up his mind.

"Alright, let's give the FBI another week. Lucas is set to go hunting in a week. I think, if we truly want to get to him, it would be best to do it then. He will have his bodyguards with him, but we're five and superior to any of them in the forest. Agreed?"

Everyone nodded except John.

"John, it's better to wait. Let's wait until he's exposed in the open, without the security systems, where the terrain is under our control."

John sat, staring at Craig. His gaze persisted until a single tear rolled down his cheek. He marched towards the bedroom. "One way or another, he will pay with his life. I'll wait another week, but if the FBI doesn't have him on Friday, I'm out, and he will pay the price." John stormed into the bedroom.

The others watched him, understanding his pain. Once John closed the door, Carl commented, "I get it if someone killed my wife, they'd have to die. I'm sorry, but that's life's way."

They all nodded and agreed. One by one, they stood up and left.

---------------- November 10, 2022, Seattle, WA -----------------

John and Yvonne had shared an intimate night together every night - both naked. It was the evening before they were to leave when John shared with Yvonne about Maggie.

"I appreciate your presence," John began, addressing his companion. "Your attendance has helped me recall the significance of living life. I've had conversations with Angel and Maddie recently, both are coping well. Angel had worries about me, which I eventually eased. Maddie, tragically having lost her mother, finds herself facing a considerable challenge.

I've visited the Bradfords a couple of times in the past few weeks now, and it's becoming simpler to discuss the subject of Maggie with Maddie. We've shared some meaningful discourse about the good times we shared. I'm grateful that Maddie has no hard feelings towards me. I negatively impacted my friends with my actions.

'No,' my friend responded, 'it's not your fault. You were attempting to save lives, and the antagonists couldn't tolerate it. They're responsible for any casualties or deaths, not you.'

Regardless, John carried his guilt with him.

'True, but it's because you care deeply and hold morals that the unscrupulous cannot comprehend,' his acquaintance reassured him.

'I'm grateful for your sympathies,' John replied. 'I still think about her.'

'Of course,' his friend said. 'The bond between you two was not just a marriage. You both had been intimately involved for a decade.'

'That's correct.'

'And she might not have been in the healthiest state,' his friend continued. 'But we're all flawed.' Yvonne took a deep breath and smilingly said, "And you've always complimented her perfectly curved physique."

John chucked at this comment. "She was indeed. She was relatively fit, but the form of her posterior was captivating."

Yvonne smiled back at John. "And you, my dear, were her major suitor."

"Yes. Now, tragically, I have two deceased partners, both exceptional individuals whom I greatly miss. They were intelligent, amusing, and attractive."

'Though you will mourn them, life moves on. Your first wife and you were a good fit, but it's passing time for you, dear John. The often-changing world will gladly accept those who adapt. But first, you must overcome the grief for Maggie,' his friend remarked.

John pondered this statement. He wondered if the remark held a hint of something more. However, it would have to wait for another time. Turning to his friend, "I should depart soon. I have a lot to accomplish."

"And I too," Yvonne responded.

------------------- Friday, November 11, 2022, Seattle, WA ---------------

John, Marty, Carl, and George joined at John's residence at 0900. The plan was for Craig to remain behind and manage the business to substitute for their absence. They bore their bags and various equipment, concealing their rifles. George provided additional information.

"The Montana gun laws are lax. We may carry openly or hidden. Our Washington concealed/carry permits and their laws allow open carry. We shouldn't worry about losing our weapons to any Montana law enforcement," George shared.

"Good news, indeed," John responded.

He glanced at everyone in the group. "Everyone ready?" They nodded.

They all loaded the hired RV, with John at the helm. Unbeknownst to most, Yvonne had also rented it under a pseudonym, and they had stocked it with food and drink. John and Yvonne had also taken care to ensure adequate ammunition. Before their journey, each individual had made sure to replenish their ammunition supply.

John drove the group north, wondering about his motives. While he believed in not initiating violence, he had killed before. He knew the authorities were investigating him, but he doubted this offender would receive a fair trial or remain in the U.S. once released on bail. Thus, he saw his plans as a way to right a wrong and protect other women from this predator and his organization.

As John drove, Marty, Carl, and George prepared their backpacks. They made sure they carried all the necessary items and had enough water, even if they couldn't find drinkable water. They had some old iodine tablets as well. They also secured all the straps and buckles on their backpacks. They also checked if their firearms were clean and loaded. The magazines were inserted into the weapons, but no shell was chambered yet - that could be done later in the woods.

With everyone ready, John received a call from Yvonne. He handed his phone to George. "George, take down any information from Yvonne while I'm driving."

George spoke on the phone for a few minutes and then hung up. "Yvonne has information. Lucas and his two guards have loaded themselves up and left this morning. They were using a single Jeep."

"Alright, we'll find them. George, you'll need to locate them using the drone once Yvonne gives us their last known location."

"Understood."

When they approached Paradise, Yvonne provided them with the Jeep's location. It was a rental with GPS functionality. She said the Jeep had been there for about 5 hours. John parked them near the Jeep and then drove a little farther. Everyone got out and gathered their belongings. They switched off their mobile phones and turned on their satellite phones - one for the group, and one for George.

George got his drone ready and launched it. He would be responsible for finding them once Yvonne provided them with the last location Lucas' group was seen.

George flew his drone high enough to stay out of earshot. He switched to infrared thermal imaging and scanned the area. After about 15 minutes, George reported that he'd found them. They were around 10 miles away and had made good progress in these 5 hours. It was now almost 5 pm, and they had less than an hour of daylight left. They followed the information provided by George and started moving.

At around 8 pm, George called. Lucas' group had stopped for the night and built a fire. They appeared to be cooking. The hunting group decided to stay put and wait until the morning to close the gap. George informed them that they were still about 4 miles behind.

The three men settled down without making a fire. They had heat tabs and warmed their pre-packed meals. Even though they hadn't needed to, they joked about it to ease the tension.

Carl set his phone's alarm for 6 am. They wanted to start their daybreak hunt by then.

Around 5:30 am, the trio started stirring. Their instincts awakened them early for the hunt.

They had a quick breakfast and started moving slowly, waiting for the sun to come up. They assumed Lucas' group might sleep a bit longer, which would give them time to reduce the gap without pushing too hard. But they set out at a good pace regardless, considering the uneven, underdeveloped terrain.

George called them on the satellite phone around 9 am. They were less than a mile away and George didn't want to wait any longer. Lucas' group had already risen and stopped, according to George.

John, Marty, and Carl quickly decided. It was time. They dropped their backpacks, checked their firearms, and took up their positions, covering Lucas and the other two guards. John took out Lucas, Marty and Carl took out the other two. They'd been prepared for this for some time and were all expert marksmen, but there were always risks.

John, Marty, and Carl were just starting to unstrap their backpacks and get into position when they heard something. A helicopter. They went back into hiding and John whispered, "I think they're making a run for it. Maybe even to Canada. We can't let them escape." John quickly dropped his backpack, prepared his weapon, and waited for the optimal position to shoot. The other two decided who they would take and also readied themselves.

However, the helicopter showed up sooner than expected. They had been preparing to fire when it suddenly swooped into the open area in front of them and Lucas' team, landing unexpectedly. Their opportunity was gone, the helicopter obstructing their view of Lucas' group. The trio waited for any chance but the door on their side remained closed as three individuals climbed aboard the helicopter, leaving them without a solid target for John and the others. They couldn't risk taking down an entire helicopter, so they watched it ascend and depart from them towards the north.

Promptly, John grabbed the satellite phone. He rang George. "George, they got onto a helicopter. Can you keep up and track its path?"

"I'll check, I'll get back to you."

John handed the phone to Marty. "You better ring Allison immediately."

Marty called Allison and shared the information. There was clearly some commotion on the other side as Marty winced and pulled the phone away from his ear. Afterwards, he returned.

"I'm in for it after this," he smiled, shrugging his shoulders. "But it is what it is."

The three soiled and fatigued members of John's crew walked back to their belongings. They glanced at the helicopter fading away in the distance. They collected their things and began the lengthy, slow journey back to George and the Jeep.

John was upset. The individual responsible for numerous crimes, including Maggie's death, had escaped.

Around 4pm, they reached the Jeep, having taken their time and had lunch during the journey. When they got to the Jeep, John recalled to call Yvonne, she might be able to provide details on what happened to them and where the helicopter had gone. Carl drove since John seemed drained from the missed opportunity for revenge. The whole way back, all John could think about was not being able to avenge Maggie.
